Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't adoption fees cover all expenses?
Our greatest goal is to find every dog in our care a loving, permanent home where they can spend the rest of their lives surrounded by kindness and compassion. Our adoption fees are intentionally kept affordable because they cover only a small fraction of the thousands of dollars we often invest in veterinary care, rehabilitation, housing, food, and daily care before a dog is ready for adoption.
What happens if a fundraiser exceeds its goal?
If a fundraiser exceeds its goal, every additional dollar continues to help the featured dog with any ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, and follow-up needs. If those needs have been fully met, the remaining funds are used to provide lifesaving medical treatment and care for other dogs in our rescue with equally urgent needs. We are committed to using every donation responsibly and for the charitable purposes for which it was given.
Whenever possible, we share updates on the dogs your generosity has helped, including their medical progress and happy endings.
Can I pay a veterinarian directly?
Yes—whenever possible, we welcome direct payments to our veterinary partners. If a dog is being treated at our primary veterinary hospital, ACH Walnut Creek, you can simply call the hospital, make your payment over the phone, and let them know your donation is for Hugs For Harry and the specific dog you'd like it applied to.
Please note that UC Davis Veterinary Hospital does not accept direct payments from individual donors toward a patient's account. If a dog is receiving treatment at UC Davis, the only way to support their care is by donating through the Hugs For Harry donation link designated for that fundraiser. Every dollar received is applied to that dog's medical expenses in accordance with the campaign's stated purpose.
Are donations tax deductible?
Yes. Hugs For Harry is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, so donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. After making a donation, you will receive a receipt for your records. We recommend consulting your tax advisor if you have questions about the deductibility of your specific contribution.
Can I sponsor one specific dog?
Absolutely. If you'd like to support the care of a particular dog, you may designate your donation for that dog through one of our fundraising campaigns or by including the dog's name with your donation. Your gift will be used to help provide that dog's medical care, food, medications, rehabilitation, and other essential needs. If a dog's needs are fully met or they are adopted, any remaining designated funds will be used to care for other dogs in our rescue with urgent medical or welfare needs, ensuring your generosity continues to save lives.
